“DZMM Kapamilya Shower Na” wins Philippine Quill Award of the Year!
ABS-CBN Corporation bagged a total of six awards, including the coveted top prize the Philippine Quill Award of the Year for Communication Management for its novel and noble disaster response program “DZMM Kapamilya Shower Na,” which beat 12 other excellence awardees in the category at the 10th Philippine Quill Awards held recently at the Crowne Plaza.
Broadcast journalist Ted Failon, ABS-CBN Head of Manila Radio Peter Musngi, and DZMM station manager Marah Faner Capuyan received the top award, which was introduced for the first time in the annual awarding organized by the prestigious International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines.
“DZMM Kapamilya Shower Na,” which also received an Award of Excellence in the Special Events category, was initiated by ABS-CBN’s AM radio station as an immediate response to help the typhoon Ondoy victims by turning a 20-foot container van into a mobile shower facility that benefitted thousands of typhoon and calamity victims cramped in evacuation centers insufficient or unhygienic toilet facilities. The mobile shower van has 12 fully tiled cubicles with shower heads and mirrors and deployed to areas struck by calamaities to help victims.
ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs’ “Boto Mo, iPatrol Mo: Ako ang Simula” won an Award of Excellence in the Multi-Audience Communication category for starting a bigger movement that didn’t only empower Filipinos to use technology to report electoral fraud, but also encouraged Filipinos, especially the youth, to instigate changes from their own homes and communities and to participate in the 2010 elections by registering to vote and patrolling the vote.
“Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo,” which was also a finalist in the Philippine Quill Award of the Year for Communication Management, is a multiplatform campaign that triggered a spike in voter registration and created wider awareness on election issues and candidates. It was marked by monthly nationwide BMPM days, citizen journalism workshops, several leadership forums and debates, election specials and a concert.
Through BMPM, ABS-CBN broke the news on the Maguindanao massacre, considered as the deadliest act against journalists in the world. It was a Boto Patroller who first sent a picture from the crime scene. By Election Day, BMPM already had 81,000 citizen journalists (Boto Patrollers) patrolling from every city and province in the nation.
ABS-CBN received three Awards of Merit for its “2009 Annual Report” for publications design, “Estero De Paco Clean-Up” for the Economic, Social & Environmental Development category and “Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko” for the Marketing Communications category.
ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. launched the first phase of the seven-year Pasig River rehabilitation by focusing on the the clean-up of Estero de Paco – one of the tributaries of Pasig River system and the perfect example of the state of the river on a small scale. AFI forged partnerships with government and private sectors in relocating informal settlers, putting up facilities to convert wastes into useful materials, applying technologies to clean the water bodies, mobilizing the community to maintain the cleanliness of river, utilizing the power of media to give progress reports and organizing annual marathons to make a statement in reviving the river.
ABS-CBN took the duty of aiding the restoration of hope, unity, and healing of our nation during Typhoon Ondoy by launching a “Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko” Christmas Campaign, which included the hit Christmas song that painted a picture of a country rising from devastation and became an anthem for hopeful and united people willing to help, rebuild, and move on. The integrated marketing communications campaign also involved the selling of Parol ni Bro, parol-lighting ceremony, viewers’ promo, Christmas special and bazaar.
The 2009 ABS-CBN Corporation Annual Report described the company’s vision and mission and how these were fulfilled by the breadth and scale of the Company’s businesses in terms of content creation as well as distribution during the year. More importantly, it provided its intended audiences with timely and accurate reporting of the financial and operating performance for the year ended December 31, 2009, in line with the best practice corporate governance principles of fairness, accountability and transparency.
Crooner Richard Poon, fresh from the success of his concert recently at the PICC, performed the song “What a Wonderful World” to the delight of the audience, composed mostly of executives from the country’s top corporations. ABS-CBN’s “Showtime” grand finalist Enlighten black theater wowed the crowd with its production number depicting the evolution of communication.
The prestigious Philippine Quill Award is being given by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines and is awarded to communications programs and tools that exhibit clear objectives and strategies, creative executions and measurable benefits. It is considered to be the country’s most prestigious and relevant award for business communications programs.
IABC is a global network of more than 14,000 business communication professionals in over 60 countries. The Philippines is the first IABC chapter outside North America.

Glee The Christmas Album is Glee’s fifth release in 2010, and the first of two full-length albums to be issued in November alone.
Appearing several weeks after another holiday-themed record - The Rocky Horror Glee Show, it features a handful of wintertime tunes, from the standard crop of Christmas carols to more secular fare like Frank Loesser’s “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” and the Carpenters’ “Merry Christmas Darling.” Most of the carols are what you’d expect: slick, sentimental, and performed in Glee’s familiar Broadway-pop style, with solos by the cast members and backup vocals by a group of unseen professionals.
“Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” on the other hand, melts under the unexpected warmth of Chris Colfer’s duet with Darren Criss, who plays Kurt’s openly gay love interest. A duet between two male characters - with lyrics like “Gosh, your lips are delicious,” no less - is a refreshingly risqué move for Fox TV, not to mention a definite album highlight. After all, Glee became popular by pushing boundaries and ignoring convention, so it’s reassuring to see the spark still burning.
Track List:
* We Need A Little Christmas (Jenna Ushkowitz, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer)
* Deck The Rooftop (Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera, Kevin McHale, Heather Morris, and Jenna Ushkowitz)
* Merry Christmas Darling (Lea Michele)
* Baby, It’s Cold Outside (Chris Colfer and Darren Criss)
* The Most Wonderful Day Of The Year (Chord Overstreet, Mark Salling, Kevin McHale, Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Heather Morris)
* Last Christmas (Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Kevin McHale, Mark Salling, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Chris Colfer)
* God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (Lea Michele, Amber Riley, Naya Rivera, and Jenna Ushkowitz)
* O Christmas Tree (Matthew Morrison)
* Jingle Bells (Cory Monteith, Mark Salling, and Kevin McHale)
* You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch (k.d. lang and Morrison)
* Angels We Have Heard On High (Amber Riley)
* O Holy Night (Lea Michele)

GLEE Season 2 'The Substitute' Recap

When a bad case of the flu starts going around at Mckinley, Schue goes home sick where he can hallucinate baby versions of the glee clubbers, perform Make em Laugh with Mike, and be stalked by his ex wife. Terri offers to take care of him while he’s sick but he refuses, acts like a douche and tells her to get out. She tries again, only this time with the power of some vapor rub and they end up sleeping together. Ew Terry! He has the flu! Gross! But Schue doesn’t let us down with his known doucheyness and basically tells Terri not to come back because she was a mistake and he was lonely. Nice.
While Schue is out sick, his substitute teacher Holly Holiday (Guest Star Gwyneth Paltrow) takes over the glee club. Can we just stop for a second? Holly Holiday? Who is coming up with these names?? Anyways, she’s not your normal teacher. She’s a “cool” teacher. She can joke around about weed and take the kids to Taco Bell! All the makings of a fine teacher. She’s a breath of fresh air for the club however when she announces they can sing whatever they want. This is fantastic news for the group who have been growing tired of Schue and his old fashioned tastes. Holly shows the kids how to have fun with Glee (like they don’t already know) and they all perform Cee Lo’s Forget You.
Sue is the new principal of Mckinley! Bah! Is that gonna last? Is Figgins really gone? Things are looking bleak for anyone without a heart of stone at the school when Sue begins her reign of terror. She wants to disband the football team and of course Glee. I can never keep track of her friendship with Will but apparently she’s bored of it this week. Next on her list of things to go? TATOR TOTS. Dun dun dun. This is devastating news for Mercedes who apparently cannot bring her own lunch to school and has no idea what broccoli is. It’s like a bad Jamie Oliver parody. She’s having a bad week in my opinion what with losing her tots and having Kurt treat her like poo.
He’s been blowing her off to hang out with his new obsession Blaine. Now don’t get me wrong Kurt, you hang out with him all you want if it means I get to see him. But don’t be mean to your friends. :( I can’t really figure out what Kurt’s problem is with Mercedes this week. He’s acting like she’s embarassing him by existing and that she’s overstepping her boundaries by wanting to hang out with him. He tries to set her up with the only black guy in school and she gets offended. She tags along on a hangout session with him and Blaine anyway but it’s a little too gay for her liking. Kurt lays it down and tells her she needs to get a boyfriend and stop using him to fill her loneliness void. Ouch. Can’t they still be friends? She should have thrown her tots at his face.
Schue has it out with Holly for taking over his job and being better at it than he is. They clash over their methods but eventually see eye to eye. They get together and join forces to create a mashup of his classic tastes (Singin In The Rain) with her contemporary tastes (Umbrella).
What did you guys think? I must still be on a high from last week because I didn’t love this one. While I’m impressed by Paltrow’s voice, I’d rather see the kids perform more instead of having her in every number. I feel like Kurt puts me through an emotional rollercoaster. He’s mean to his friends but then gets threatened by his bully and I feel sorry for him.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if Terri ended up pregnant this time for real?

Talent Manager Wyngard Tracy Dies of Heart Attack; Wake, No. Party, Yes!

Talent manager Wyngard Tracy passed away early this morning, at around 3:45 a.m., November 16.
Tracy was rushed to Makati Medical Center on October 20. Reports said he suffered his third stroke. The following day, on October 21, Tracy had an operation to remove the blood clot in his brain.
Earlier in July, Tracy underwent a heart surgery after he was rushed to the hospital due to a heart attack.
Before his death, Tracy specifically requested that there be no wake for him. Instead, he wants his family and friends to have a party.
The memorial mass for the talent manager will be at 5:00 p.m. today at La Salle Greenhills Chapel.
The "party," as he wished, will be held on Thursday, November 18.
Tracy is the new manager of Richard Gomez, Lucy Torres, Wendell Ramos, John Estrada, and Priscilla Meirelles—all of whom were former talents of Douglas Quijano who died last year.

After vampires and werewolves became hit on television, zombies will not be left behind.
If you like Lost because it’s unpredictable and True Blood because of its guts, then you should not miss this new critically-acclaimed tv series “The Walking Dead.” Literally and figuratively, it’s all guts!
Zombies will now give vampires and werewolves a run for their money with the premiere of the new AMC TV series. It was developed for television by Frank Darabont and based upon the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard.
The series stars Andrew Lincoln (Love Actually), Jon Bernthal (The Pacific), Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break), Laurie Holden (The Mist), Jeffrey DeMunn (The Green Mile), Steven Yeun (The Big Bang Theory) and Emma Bell (The Bedford Diaries) as a group of survivors traveling in search of a safe and secure home.
The Walking Dead tells the story of the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse; it follows a small group of survivors traveling across the desolate United States in search of a new home away from the shuffling hordes of the undead. The group is led by Rick Grimes, who was a King County, Georgia sheriff’s deputy in the old world. As their situation grows more and more grim, the group’s desperation to survive pushes them to the brink of insanity. At every turn they are faced with unspeakable horrors, both from those who are dead, and from the scattered remains of a struggling human populace.

After 10 Years...MYX Remains The No. 1 Music Channel in the Philippines

The no. 1 music channel in the Philippines turns 10.
"Your Choice. Your Music.” goes the slogan that MYX upholds. Be it through text message, e-mail or even via social networking response, there is no doubt that MYX, the No. 1 music channel in the Philippines, has empowered Filipino music lovers to express what music they want to enjoy on TV.
But unknown to many, MYX, 10 years ago, like any other armless neophyte had its most difficult challenge on what path in the TV industry it must take.
MYX Channel Head Andre Allan Alvarez shared what really took place before the music channel has got its consistent post as the No. 1 music channel in the country. He also detailed how MYX’s unique ideas have captivated everyone’s hearts.
Birth of MYX
For how many years, UHF channel Studio 23 used to give MTV, the international media giant, some of its programming hours in the early morning, afternoon and late evening. But MTV Asia wanted a 24-hour channel which Studio 23 could not grant, since the UHF channel’s popular US programs (Dawson’s Creek, Charmed, The Nanny, etc.) were very popular with viewers and advertisers. To fulfil its long-time goal, MTV Asia partnered with Nation Broadcasting Corporation to launch MTV Philippines as a 24/7 music channel on UHF channel 41.
“The first impulse [for Studio 23] was to look for another partner—another foreign music channel—to fill in those [programming hours MTV left]. But after we have assessed everything, we realized that before we can have our new partner, we have to pay fees for royalties and licensing their names, etc. We were debating on why we need to pay for a name which is not known here in the Philippines. So FMG [ABS-CBN former president Freddie M. Garcia] said, kung gagastos din na man na lang tayo, we might as well invest on something that’s ours. The idea of producing our own music block for the network came out during that period,” Alvarez narrated.
In 2000, MYX, an alternative music block on Studio 23 with the tag “More Choices. More Music.” came into being. It offered music videos which were seldom or not even played in music giants like MTV.
“Let’s not go after the same pie. Humiwalay na lang tayo. Kung kayo diyan sa pop mainstream, kami dito sa alternative. We know that going up against MTV is crazy, so why even bother? Hindi ka mananalo. This was the height of Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, etc. We wouldn’t have the same access that they have,” Alvarez explained why MYX didn’t right gear up to compete with existing music channels then.
“Many liked the original incarnation of MYX. But obviously, it didn’t capture the market MTV was dominating back then. Our slogan ‘More Choices. More Music.’ meant that MYX offered a wide range of music videos than what we usually see in the other channels,” Alvarez continued.
MYX reborn
Amazingly, during that period, there was another music channel named Vid-OK which was also handled by Alvarez. It was a “schizo” experience for him to manage both mainstream and alternative music programming. He never thought that his mind-deteriorating accounts will be soon one and later on become No. 1.
“On that historic date, February 14, 2002, we were called to the boardroom with the executives of this network [ABS-CBN]. I was kind of scared. Why are we all here? What’s gonna happen? Are we getting fired? FMG, Mr. Gabby Lopez, Ms. Charo Santos-Concio and Studio 23 executives were there. Pretty much, it was put on the table, why do have two music channels —VID-OK and MYX? On that day, it was declared that the two will be merged,” Alvarez revealed.
MYX, then became a full-pledged 24 hour music channel on cable. It’s now on a mainstream format ala VID-OK but carried the name “MYX”. Alvarez had no choice but to assemble a new team for the projected new music station.
“Siyempre, on the first year of the reprogrammed MYX, yung fans ng lumang MYX, galit na galit sila bakit daw pinalitan yung format. Bakit naging mainstream? We had a new batch of VJs who can now talk in Taglish, if they feel like it. And for the first time, sa MYX channel, may lyrics na ‘yung mga music videos, which was carried from the signature style of VID-OK,” Alvarez said.
Lyrics put MYX at No. 1 spot
Just a few months after its relaunching in June 2002, MYX became No. 1. With its VJs Heart Evangelista, Ala Paredes, Franco Mabanta, Michi Valeriano, MYX was flooded with fan mails expressing support for the newest hit.
“We couldn’t believe that it happened so fast. Una, totoo ba ito? This is something we’ve never experienced in the past. But it just became a reality to us when we saw all the other variety shows. Lahat sila may lyrics na din,” Alvarez shared.
“That [lyrics on music videos and performances] is part our legacy which changed Philippine TV programming. They have us to blame for actually having it there. Kasi hindi naman ginagawa yun before,” he added.
MYX MO! 2010
Alongside MYX’s success, major events are held to bring the music channel closer to the hearts of Pinoy music lovers. There is the prestigous MYX Music Awards giving honor to people’s most favorite music. Also, there is the MYX VJ Search for the newest hot jocks on TV. Summer MYX Fest and MYX Slam Jam travel across the nation. And finally, there is the phenomenal MYX Mo!, which features all of the country’s most-talked about music artists — be it rock, pop, RnB ballad etc.
This year, MYX is proud to present MYX Mo! 2010 with the tag “I ♥ MYX” on November 18, 2010 at SM Mall Of Asia Concert Grounds.
“MYX Mo! is our way of thanking our viewers for supporting us and for making MYX the no. 1 music channel in the Philippines. Yung aming slogan na “Your Choice. Your Music.” pinaninindigan talaga namin ‘yun. We really do our best to make our viewers feel empowered,” said Alvarez. In this year’s celebration, various artists from different genres including well-known OPM artists and bands like Chicosci, Kjwan, Sponge Cola, Callalily, Imago, Rivermaya and a lot more. Pop rock princess Yeng Constantino, singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid, Noel Cabangon, Kitchie Nadal and Barbie Almalbis, plus acoustic singers Nyoy Volante and Jimmy Bondoc will also be there to join the celebration of Pinoy music.
I ♥ MYX campaign
Ten years have passed. Some music channels have shutdown their operations, but MYX still remains No. 1. To express its “big love” to its viewers, it launched its I ♥ MYX campaign.
If you want to be part of this musical event, just purchase I ♥ MYX shirts worth P399.75 and 299.75, and party in the gold and silver section of the much-awaited MYX Mo! 2010 concert, respectively. For those who would like to avail of the bronze tickets, just grab a copy of the MYX Magazine “I ♥ MYX” issue (MYX VJs on the cover), exclusively available in all 7-Eleven outlets.
“Each year MYX has its own evolution and growth. I think as time passes things keep on getting better and better. Pretty much in our 10 years, we’ve had our biggest challenges but we had our biggest successes, as well,” Alvarez said when asked to describe the 10 years of MYX.
Join MYX as it gives more exciting events in celebration of a decade-long dominance in the Philippine music scene.

MYX, undoubtedly the country's leading music channel, celebrates a decade of playing awesome, beautiful music through what is expected to be its biggest anniversary concert ever.
"It's a rain or shine event," said Andre Alvarez, MYX Channel head and editor-in-chief of MYX magazine of the concert slated November 18 at the Concert Grounds of SM Mall of Asia.
"This is not unexpected, I mean the rain to pour, because in the past, it has rained during our concerts but people didn't mind being soaked wet. In fact, they hate it if some bring umbrellas. They really would rather get wet," Andre added.
Performers include popular OPM artists and bands like Chicosci, Kjwan, Spongecola, Callalily, Imago, and Rivermaya among others. Also joining the celebration of Pinoy music are hitmaker Ogie Alcasid, pop rock princess Yeng Constantino, Noel Cabangon, Kitchie Nadal and Barbie Almalbis as well as acoustic singers Nyoy Volante and Jimmy Bondoc.
As always, the concert is for free but this time fans of the music channel who would want to be seated in the gold section may only have to buy the limited edition "I Love MYX" shirts available at SM Department stores nationwide. Shirts for the silver section are also available, and for the bronze tickets one has only to buy a copy of MYX magazine's anniversary issue available in all 7-11 outlets.
It was on November 20, 2000 that MYX started its test broadcast on Studio 23 with Clara Balaguer as their first VJ. After only two months, it had a full music block on the same UHF channel, playing music for a more sophisticated crowd. In 2002, MYX fused with Vid-Ok karaoke channel to become a 24/7 cable network. Soon, MYX attracted not only the classy audience but also a larger and broader market segment.
"But initially we were geared towards an alternative audience," Andre said. "Our programming was very alternative. We played what the other music channel (MTV) wasn't playing, para hindi magbanggaan."
When MYX was relaunched, they started to tap a new breed of VJs, no longer the half-Spanish, half-British types. Among them were Heart Evangelista, Karel Marquez, Geoff Eigenmann, Iya Villania, Robi Domingo, Luis Manzano, Nikki Gil, among others.
"After only a month we relaunched, we became No. 1 and there was no turning back," Andre proudly stated. "We empowered our viewers. Kung ano ang gusto nila, 'yon ang pina-patugtog namin."

Charo Santos-Concio Reads to Ondoy Victims Through DZMM's Clinic and Classroom on Wheels

Telling a story is nothing new to ABS-CBN President Charo Santos-Concio, the host of the 19-year-old drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya.” But last Saturday, November 6, Charo got to experience a different kind of storytelling as a volunteer in DZMM’s Teaching Learning Caring (TLC) clinic-on-wheels and classroom-on-wheels project.
While people lined up for free medical check-ups at the clinic-on-wheels, Santos-Concio played teacher to 30 children aged six to eleven in a tent beside the classroom-on-wheels. After reading a book, she led a discussion among the kids, some of which have never set foot on a school. They were very participative, and she was touched by this.
“Nakikita mo sa mga mata nila they're very focused and attentive. There's the hunger for knowledge. Nakakataba ng puso na mabigyan sila ng pagkakataong matuto,” she recounted.
Santos-Concio, together with ABS-CBN Manila Radio Division Head Peter Musngi, and DZMM anchors Ted Failon, Ariel Ureta, and Bernadette Sembrano were in Angono, Rizal that time with a group of volunteer doctors and teachers for the very first outing of DZMM TLC.
DZMM TLC aims to promote health and spark the children's interest in learning in areas devastated by Typhoon Ondoy, like Angono.
A product of the ingenuity and hard work of the men and women of DZMM, TLC is a spin-off of ‘Kapamilya, Shower Na,’ a mobile shower for typhoon victims conceptualized by Failon last year. The outpouring support from ‘Kapamilya, Shower Na’ donors paved the way for the construction of TLC’s clinic-on-wheels and classroom-on-wheels.
“Kakaiba ito dahil dati rati sinasabihan natin sa publiko na pumunta sa ABS-CBN Foundation o DZMM Public Service Center. Pero napagisip-isip namin na marami pa tayong puwedeng gawin. Mayroon tayong mga truck, clinic at classroom on wheels na puwede nating dalhin kung nasaan mismo yung mga nangangailangan,” Musngi explained.
DZMM has partnered with doctor societies and hospitals for the free medical consultations for up to 300 residents per area visited, and publishing houses and bookstores for the books and storytellers for the classroom-on-wheels. Aside from these activities, there will also be film showings, talks, and a soup kitchen-style feeding program in every TLC outing.
Santos-Concio said the support of DZMM for these communities won’t end with every trip. “We hope to involve the local government para maipagpatuloy 'yung ginagawa natin. Kaya ineengganyo ko ang mga volunteer teachers and doctors to take part in DZMM TLC," she said.
Musngi added that DZMM will conduct training for barangay leaders and turnover educational toys and books to them so they may continue imparting care and knowledge after the DZMM TLC caravan has taken off. He said the clinic-on-wheels may also be used to respond to emergencies.
Failon said he hopes other groups will be inspired by the idea behind TLC. "Ito ay isang program na dapat gayahin sa anumang panig ng bansa para maabot maski ang mga mamamayan sa liblib na pook," said the "Tambalang Failon at Webb" anchor.
TLC, DZMM's latest advocacy project, will be going to Marikina City next on November 20 with Noli "Kabayan" De Castro as the story teller. The country's number one radio station and leading cable news channel is also involved in on-going medical missions, the annual Buntis Congress, mass christening and other activities that prove that it is not only "Una sa Balita" but also "Una sa Public Service."
Meanwhile, DZMM also posted a 27% audience share in Mega Manila for the month of September based on the 2010 Nielsen Mega Manila RAM to continue its rule as the number one AM radio station.
You can take part in DZMM TLC by donating useable children’s book for all ages, school supplies, toiletries, medicines, and educational toys. Just bring them to the Public Service Center at G/F of the ABS-CBN Foundation Bldg., Mother Ignacia Ave. Diliman, Quezon City from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. For more information, just call Zaldy Naguit at 9244101 o 9244122 loc. 5674.
