"Power of 10" on GMA-7

Posted by JED on , under , , | comments (2)

Power of 10 is an American game show to be adapted on Philippine television by GMA-7.

Power of 10 originated from CBS with Drew Carey as host. The show ran from August 7, 2007 to April 7, 2008 and aired twice weekly during the late summer and early fall. Each game featured contestants predicting how a cross-section of Americans responded to questions covering a wide variety of topics in polls conducted by CBS. The top prize was $10,000,000. Some international versions follow the same money ladder, but in local currency. The show was adapted in more than 30 countries including China, Malaysia, Indonesia and South Korea.

QTV-11 aired the original version on Philippine television in 2008. GMA-7, on the other hand, aquired the rights for the Philippine version which is set to premiere on May 10, 2009. Janno Gibbs will serve as host.

"World View Presents Think Positive!" on GMA-7

In December, Wanggo Gallaga, son of acclaimed director Peque Gallaga, surprised the whole country when he admitted on national television that he has HIV. His admission was met with confusion: How can a young, healthy-looking professional be infected with the dreaded virus? In the minds of many Filipinos, Wanggo does not fit “the mold” of a person who has HIV or AIDS.

More than a decade ago, statistics showed that most Filipinos with HIV or AIDS are either sex workers or OFWs. Now, according to the Department of Health, infected patients are getting younger and younger. Last year, more than 60% are between the ages of 20 and 29. Most are males, infected through sexual intercourse with the same sex. Are they the new face of HIV and AIDS in the Philippines?

In his interviews, Wanggo says the main reason he came out is to help educate Filipinos about the virus. Having HIV or AIDS is no longer the death sentence it was before. With medication and a proper lifestyle, people with HIV and AIDS can now live normal lives. He also stressed the importance of getting tested for the virus.

In the US, experts are continually looking for a cure and finding ways to improve the lives of people living with the virus.

Learn more about HIV and AIDS on "World View Presents Think Positive!" this Sunday, April 12, at 10:30 PM after Ful Haus. Only on GMA-7!

"World View Presents Think Positive!" is produced by GMA News and Public Affairs. Executive producer and writer, Jay Orense. Writer and researcher, Glenn Ala. Director and segment producer, May Bautista. (GMA-7 Press Release)

Enchong Dee Gets to Lead the "Boystown"

The new Star Magic all-male group Gigger Boys—comprised of Robi Domingo, Dino Imperial, Sam Concepcion, Arron Villaflor, AJ Perez, and Chris Gutierrez—will headline the cast of the upcoming Your Song Presents: Boystown.

(From LtoR: Enchong Dee, AJ Perez, Sam Concepcion, Arron Villaflor, Dino Imperial, Robi Domingo, and Chris Gutierrez)

Leading the show is Gigger Boys' other member Enchong Dee. "Kinakabahan ako. Sabi ko nga sa manager ko na kung pwede niya akong samahan dito sa story conference. This is very important to me because this could either make or break my career. I think the fact the nagpunta siya dito all the way from Makati amidst his busy schedule I’m very thankful. Hindi lang sa kanya kung hindi sa lahat and to God most especially. Also with all the people saying na ako ang parang lead dito, nakakakilig talaga.", said an overwhelming Enchong.

A champion swimmer, Enchong got his first showbiz break in the teen-oriented dramas Abt Ur Luv and Astigs. In the early part of his career, he did several supporting roles and was a member of many ensemble-acting pieces, most notably in Mars Ravelo’s Lastikman, My Girl, and Your Song Presents: My Only Hope. But this time around, Enchong gets to spearhead the cast of Boystown.

It’s a challenge for this 20-year-old actor-athlete to portray Arnel, a short-tempered young man. Enchong said that the story of Boystown will show different kinds of rivalries involving its characters. "Kay Robi may rivalry with girls. Kay Dino may rivalry sa physicality. Rivalry with family naman kay Tita Ana (Roces)."

When asked on how he plans to play Arnel who is very much different from his true personality, Enchong said "Tutal tapos na rin lang ang school pwede ko na siguro ilabas ang lahat ng kalokohan ko (laughs). Siguro I will try my best to play the character in the darkest way I can. In my character makikita mo ‘yung good and bad side."

"The Search is Over" for Scott MacIntyre

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Scott MacIntyre's journey to the Season 8 of American Idol is "Over".

Scott performed "The Search Is Over" and took a risk by playing the electric guitar instead of the piano on "Birth Years Performance Night" of American Idol Top 8 performances night and that difficult song made him going home tonight.

Even the judges were not satisfied on why he chose and on how he delivered the song. To quote:

Kara: "You took on a very difficult song.I'm not sure that I would've picked that song for you as a power ballad...You had some good moments but you also had some off moments...."

Paula: "I just think that maybe reaching for some of those high notes came out at times a little bit screeching."

Simon: "I suggest you go back to the piano next week...the song was horrible!"

Randy: "It didn't show you as a star as one of the best undiscovered talents in America."

American Idol Season 8, Top 8 Performances Night

Watch below (click names to view their performances) the performances of 8 remaining American Idol hopefuls singing the song of their birth years.

Danny Gokey - Stand By Me by Ben E. King (Mickey Gilley Version)

Kris Allen - All She Wants To Do Is Dance by Don Henley

Lil Rounds - What’s Love Got To Do With It by Tina Turner

Anoop Desai - True Colors by Cyndi Lauper

Scott MacIntyre - The Search Is Over by Survivor

Allison Iraheta - I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt

Matt Giraud - Part Time Lover by Stevie Wonder

Adam Lambert - Mad World by Tears For Fears

It should have been Allison Iraheta’s night on American Idol but Adam Lambert ended the show incredibly beautiful.

Bathed in dramatic blue mood lights, Adam is sitting while doing his own variation on the Donnie Darko soundtrack. The people were mesmerized. The judges lost the time to deliver their critique except for Simon who just gave him the very first standing ovation in the history of American Idol.

Vic Sotto to Host ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ on TV5

Vic Sotto is a living proof to the saying "If its meant to be, it is really meant to be."

After Richard Gomez declined TV5's offer to host their newly franchised game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire", another replacement (which according to some showbiz insider is much better choise) already inked a deal with Philippines third biggest TV station to host the new season of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.

This is Vic Sotto’s first hosting stint outside of T.A.P.E., Inc., the producer of the longest-running noontime show Eat Bulaga. He will be joining his best buddy Joey de Leon in the TV5 family. Joey is the host of "Wow Mali!" new season.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was first franchised by Viva TV way back in 2000 with Christopher de Leon as the first game master. It was aired on IBC 13 until 2002 when its studio was razed by a fire. It was a hit among Pinoy televiewers back then.

Seven years after, the popularity of the said game show was revived by the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. To date, more than 60 countries have their own version of the show. And this year, the Philippines will have its new version, too, courtesy of TV5.
