An Interview with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart

Posted by JED on , under , , | comments (3)

LOS ANGELES, California—This is the hot young actor that girls are screaming their tonsils out for?

Some reporters couldn’t reconcile Robert Pattinson who looked like he just got out of bed, his hair a thick mess, with the buzz—screaming hysteria, to be more specific—proclaiming him as Hollywood’s new “It Guy.” But when we first interviewed him on the set of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” in the UK several years ago, we knew it was only a matter of time before Robert graduated from small roles like Cedric Diggory to a star-launching gig like “Twilight.” Tall, blessed with patrician good looks, Robert stood out among the “Harry Potter” cast.

Kristen Stewart offered the most astute observation about her “Twilight” co-star: “Rob is very organic. He’s in the moment and he lets it happen which is brave ... He’s a courageous actor.”

As predicted, “Twilight,” where Robert and Kristen play Edward and Bella, respectively in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s hit novel of the same name, topped the box-office last weekend. The movie about a high school girl who falls in love with a vampire grossed over $70 million.

Below are excerpts of our separate interviews with Robert and Kristen.

ROBERT PATTINSON

How would you describe your life now?

I’ve been involved in “Twilight” all year now. I’ve been doing press for several weeks so I haven’t really had time to reflect on what my life actually is. It would be very strange being locked in a thing where I go into lots of different rooms and lots of little girls scream at me all the time (laughter). I would probably get old after a while. I think 32 is going to be my year. That’s the year I’ve always been looking forward to. I don’t know why (laughter).

How old are you now?

Twenty-two.

This movie is about obsessive love. Have you ever experienced it?

Yeah, sort of. I remember there was a girl I was totally obsessed with for about 10 years.

Ten years is a long time.

Yeah, but it’s like I never ever spoke to her. I think that’s the best type of love (laughter). I remember when reading my diaries from the time—whenever anything else would mess up with a girl, I’d be like, she’d better be worth it. When it happens, you can always have this kind of hope and then when I finally told her she was like, “You’ve never spoken to me in my whole life. You’ve only spoken to me about three times and never said anything nice (laughter).”

Are you still in a band?

I was in a band years ago. Not like a proper band but I had kind of roll-on, roll-off musicians. I still try and play but it’s weird now since when I’m trying to do it as an actor, it always seems kind of cheesy. I liked playing at open mikes in bars and stuff because it was the only time I really felt free. I did a couple of gigs in LA and people filmed and put them on the Internet. It just ruins the whole experience. You’re like “Oh, that wasn’t the point.” So I stopped. I’m going to wait for all this to die down before I start doing live gigs again.

What is your home life like?

In LA, it basically consists of waiting for my phone to ring (laughter), reading scripts and that’s about it (laughter). In London, I could replace scripts for books and I just watch a lot of movies. I have very few hobbies (laughter).

Can you tell us more about your family background?

My dad is from Yorkshire and he did a bunch of things. In the ’70s, he moved to America for a bit and just worked as a taxi driver. Then he started selling cars in the ’80s. My mom worked as a booker at a modeling agency and now they’re both retired. My mom, sisters and I speak really well. My parents were just very aware of how you’re treated differently in the world if you speak articulately. So it was just the way I was brought up.

Do you believe in having a soul mate?

I hope there is such a thing. I guess it would be quite scary to find a soul mate when you’re young because you’re probably going to mess it up (laughter).

How have you embraced the thought that you’re a sex symbol now?

It’s strange because I’m a sex symbol to 14-year-old girls (laughter) which I guess is not the most helpful situation to be in. But yeah, I’ve never really thought of it. It’s just so funny. I mean, just last year I couldn’t even get a date (laughter) and then this year, the world turns and it’s so bizarre (laughter) that everybody just changes their mind at the same time (laughter).

You couldn’t get a date?

When I was in London, it was like, not at all. I don’t know why. That’s all I talked about the whole of last year—that I need to get a girlfriend. I need to get a girlfriend and then this year, I could have any 12-year-old I wanted (laughter).

What do you look for in a girl?

I’m always shocked by the people who I’m attracted to. It’s always completely random. I generally like people who are a bit crazy but yeah, that’s pretty much my only prerequisite.

You get to run up a tree, among other special things. How did you achieve some of these effects?

I can’t even walk in a straight line so it was very tough doing all that type of stuff. It was designed like in a kung fu movie in a lot of sequences. That was tough—virtually anything to do on a harness because you have to exert so much effort just maintaining your center of gravity. It’s tougher especially when you have to make it look effortless and not breath as well (laughter). That was probably the hardest thing I had to do in the movie.

How long did you rehearse for stunts that required wire work?

Not a huge amount of time. About two weeks, I guess, and I had to do a ton of it as well.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I don’t know much about contemporary music. I do have an iPod but I listen to a lot of old blues. I listen to John Lee Hooker and Elmore James. I have been listening to them for years. I was obsessed with Van Morrison for years. I went to see him recently where he performed “Astral Weeks.” I just spent the entire night crying (laughter) but I was really obsessed with Van Morrison.

Were you a rebellious teenager?

I really wasn’t very much of a rebel. I’m seen by people now as more of a rebel which is strange. I don’t like doing what people tell me to do. I don’t deliberately rebel against them.

How did you evoke sexiness in this role?

A lot of it has to do with not speaking—like that always makes somebody more attractive. I wasn’t really trying to play Edward as a sexy guy, though. He’s not very sexy in the book. It’s like he’s just kind of mysterious and his whole personality works from a template. So it creates more mystery and whatever he says seems very contrived. He always has a completely opposite thought to what he’s saying in his head. He’s always hiding things. A lot of the attraction to someone is always frustration and that’s what a lot of the story is.

What concerns you most about this sudden fame?

When something or someone is hyped and you’re put on the forefront of a lot of things, people want to tear you down. That’s kind of scary, especially when you’re not really putting yourself out there.

KRISTEN STEWART

Have you had crushes that became obsessions?

I feel like most crushes are fairly obsessive—for me at least. I have experienced them.

At what age?

Oh my God, I started having some crushes on people when I was five, I think (laughter).

Your character kind of takes care of her mom. How is your own relationship with your mother?

My mom is a momma bear. She’s the caretaker but in a sort of nonmaternal way. I have a lot of brothers who aren’t my biological brothers. We take in strays but I’m friends with my mom. The one thing that Bella is not getting from her mom is that her mother is not being a mom. She’s just a buddy and you don’t need a friend in a mom always. I mean, that could be a good part of it but you need more than that and I have both parts in my mom.

Tell us more about your mother taking in strays. That sounds exciting.

She’s just taking in friends that I’ve acquired who just don’t have it easy in their own homes. That’s really great. I just did a movie called “Welcome to the Rileys” where I play a homeless kid. She’s squatting in a house at the time that you see her in the movie. She’s essentially homeless and it’s this entire counterculture that I was completely unaware of—runaways and people, kids particularly, who live on the streets.

So your mother rehabilitates them and they go back…

No, these are my brothers. We keep them. These are my best friends (laughter). Yeah, we keep them.

What did Robert bring to the table? How did you arrive at that chemistry between the two of you?

Rob came into the audition looking sort of terrified, like a subdued fear and pained. The pain was just very evident in him. I am not saying it’s in Rob but he knew what to bring to that character. We didn’t need the statuesque, model-types who come in and just pose. I couldn’t see any of the other guys. They weren’t even looking at me. It was like they were focusing on their lines but Rob is very organic. He’s in the moment and he lets it happen which is brave. He’s brave. He’s a courageous actor.

How much training did you have to undergo for the stunts which required wire work?

I didn’t have much training. I was trained to hold onto Rob (laughter). It was like I didn’t really have to do much else. I was always trying to make it easier for him because he’s always found it very difficult. I was always trying to find points to take the pressure off of him.

We had to climb a tree once on a wire in the ballet studio at the end of the movie. It’s a pretty rigorous fight scene and there were a couple of times where he goes to pick me up. The first time he pulled his groin so they put me on a wire and we had to go up to the balcony. Then James (played by Cam Gigandet) pulls him down and I smack the floor and roll to a mark. Hitting the mark was really difficult and there was glass all over the floor. It was fake glass but it can cut you. I enjoy stuff like that. I really like physicality. I really think it’s fun.

GMA-7 Opposes ABS-CBN’s Digital TV Application

According to a report by Lenie Lectura of Business Mirror, GMA is blocking the bid of ABS-CBN to offer digital television service to consumers.

[GMA Network Inc. is blocking the bid of rival ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. to offer digital television service to consumers.

In a filing with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), GMA said ABS-CBN’s application to convert its existing analog frequency channel to digital is really a move to operate a new service and not just a conversion. “Unfortunately, ABS-CBN misleads the affected parties by designating its petition as one for migration and conversion to digital service,” said GMA.

ABS-CBN is currently applying for a new frequency, preferably within the 500 to 506-megahertz range, which is not yet assignable for broadcast use. This frequency bandwidth is presently within the band for trunked radio service.

In its application, ABS-CBN said it intends to provide digital TV-terrestrial (DT-T) service in the said frequency, as maybe available and assignable by the NTC, or preferably Channel 19. The proposed conversion, it added, will initially be a migration to operate analog and digital services concurrently until such time that the NTC mandates termination of all analog TV broadcast transmissions.

GMA opined that ABS-CBN is actually applying for a new frequency, which it can use to operate another station simultaneous with its Studio 23 analog broadcast service. No migration or conversion to digital service will actually take place as ABS-CBN’s real intention is to operate DWAC-TC Channel 23 as its analog service and, at the same time, operate a digital TV station using a different channel until the mandatory analog switch-off date, GMA pointed out.

“The instant petition should be denied on the obvious ground that no migration or conversion to digital service is contemplated herein. ABS-CBN is not applying for a migration to conversion to a digital service but for an entirely new digital broadcast service, in addition to its analog service utilizing Channel 23,” said GMA.

Furthermore, the frequency bandwidth being eyed by ABS-CBN has not yet been reallocated by the NTC for broadcast use.

“What ABS-CBN is in effect doing in this application is to stake a claim on a frequency not presently within the domain of broadcast TV spectrum, and at the same time, preserve its privilege over Channel 23. This should not be countenanced by the NTC,” said GMA.

The broadcast company also has a pending application with the NTC to transform its Channel 27 UHF (ultra-high frequency) TV station to digital broadcast service.

“With the advances in technology, particularly the introduction of digital technology in the broadcasting service, it is imperative and in the interest of public service that GMA must take measures in order to meet the growing public demand for and address the technological challenge of digital TV broadcast service,” said GMA in its application.

The TV network said it is financially capable to adopt a digital terrestrial TV broadcast platform, and to acquire, operate and maintain the necessary equipment for use in the broadcast of quality TV programs. It presented to the NTC a proof showing its financial capacity. GMA’s capital was recently increased to P6.5 billion from P5 billion.

“The Securities and Exchange Commission has approved recently the increase of authorized capital stock from P5 billion divided into 3.5 billion common shares with the par value of P1 each and 7.5 billion preferred shares with the par value of P0.20 each to P6.5 billion divided into 5 billion common shares with the par value of P1 each and 7.5 billion preferred shares with the par value of P0.20 each,” said GMA.]

GMA-7’s I-Witness Wins Unicef and Popdev Awards

GMA Network’s I-Witness won two awards recently – the 2008 ABU CASBAA Unicef Child Rights Awards and the 2008 Popdev Media Awards for Best TV Documentary.

Jay Taruc and his team bagged the Unicef award for their “Batang Kalabaw” I-Witness documentary. It tells the story of 14-year-old Cherilyn who acts as sole breadwinner for her family and parent to her five siblings.

Out of 69 entries from 10 countries in Asia, the documentary “Batang Kalabaw” (Child Beasts of Burden) was chosen for the prestigious award this year for being “the best television programming on children’s rights produced in the Asia-Pacific region.”

This is the second I-Witness episode that won this award following the episode “Selda Inosente” (Angels in Prison) hosted by Kara David that won in 2003.

The documentary had also previously received a Certificate for Creative Excellence at the 2008 US International Film and Video Festival and the 2008 Catholic Mass Media Awards.

The awarding ceremony was held on November 24 in The Westin Resort in Bali, Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Sandra Aguinaldo and her team bagged the Popdev Media Award for “Nanay na si Nene” for its outstanding contribution in promoting awareness about the population problems in the country today.

Besting 406 entries in its category, Aguinaldo’s documentary documented the lives of two very young mothers and the difficulties as they faced of having children at such an early age.

Barely able to take care of herself, 13-year old Lealyn gave birth to twins and could only feed her babies water and sugar. Belinda, 14, when she five months pregnant, could not afford prenatal care or checkups with an obstetrician-gynecologist.

Aguinaldo also discussed the factors that cause early pregnancies in teens and how they could be prevented with sex and reproductive health education.

The documentary was chosen for the prestigious award by an elite panel of organizations from the development and journalism communities, as well as government agencies and private groups.

The awarding ceremony was held on November 26 at the Mandarin Oriental Suites in Cubao, Quezon City.

Now on its fourth year, the annual Popdev Media Awards was conducted by the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD) with the support of the United Nations Population Fund to honor outstanding and responsible journalism on population and development.

Where Did Rihanna and Chris Brown Go After The Fort Concert?

Now it can be told: Rihanna and Chris Brown decided to chill out at Alchemy’s Vapor Club (at Silver City, Frontera Verde Drive corner Julia Vargas Ave., Pasig City) after their concert last Nov. 16 at The Bonifacio Global City Open Field, whisked off in black limousines and escorted by big bouncers as they entered through the back entrance.

It wasn’t a secret, though. The night before, Brown’s manager visited Alchemy to negotiate for a post-concert party and Brown kept mentioning it during the concert.

According to the Funfare DPA, Brown and Rihanna enjoyed the drinks and the hors d‘ oeuvres, plus the music, for more than two hours.

There was a mild showdown between Brown’s dancers and Rihanna’s performer,” added the DPA. “Could it have been caused by an attractive woman who came from neither of the two groups?

Also at Alchemy that same night was American Idol Season 7 finalist Michael Johns.

Forbes Hollywood’s 10 Top Earning Couples

Posted by JED on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 , under , | comments (1)

Beyonce, 27, and husband Jay-Z, 38, recently topped Forbes’ list of Hollywood’s Richest Couples - with combined earnings for 2008 of $162 million.

Here is the complete list:

1. Shawn Jay-Z and Beyonce Knowles - $162 million
These chart-topping newlyweds have had a monster year. He banked $82 million by signing a $150 million 10-year recording, touring and merchandising deal with Live Nation. She raked in $80 million, thanks to an entertainment empire including fashion, film and publishing deals as well as a concert tour that sold $50 million in tickets and endorsement deals.

2. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith - $85 million
Will Smith maintains his role as the family breadwinner, pulling down $80 million in the year ending June 2008, thanks to another set of top-performing blockbusters. Jada managed to generate a still impressive $5 million during the same period, thanks to roles as an actress, producer, and entrepreneur.

3. David Beckham and Victoria Beckham - $58 million
Conquering fans on both sides of the Atlantic, the power couple pulled down $58 million over the course of the year. David got $50 million, mainly through endorements. His wife, also known as Posh, brought in $8 million, thanks to the $23 million Spice Girls reunion tour and a slew of product lines.

4. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill - $35 million
In addition to the big loot country sweethearts McGraw and Hill made on their Soul-2-Soul concert tour, he earned his $23 million from festivals and a double-platinum album, Let It Go. Hill reached $12 million by recording an album, The Hits, and the NFL Sunday Night Football theme song.

5. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - $34 million

Snooky Serna on The Buzz' "Tough 10"

Posted by JED on , under , , | comments (0)

Actress Snooky Serna courageously answers The Buzz' Tough 10 questions on Sunday, November 23 with Boy Abunda as the segment host.

Tough Ten Question No. 10: Bakit mo nasabi dati na pinagsisisihan mo na naging star ka at an early age? Matatandaang nagsimula si Snooky bilang child star noong '70s.

"Siguro, Tito Boy, I didn't get to enjoy my childhood as much as I would have wanted to."

Did you blame anybody for that?

"I used to, but not anymore. Tapos na yun."

Tough Ten Question No. 9:
Sa tuwing makikita mo ang mga kasabayan mo na sina Maricel Soriano at Dina Bonnevie, sa puso mo ba, may inggit ka bang nararamdaman?Magkakasabay silang inilunsad ng Regal Films sa pelikulang Underage.

"Honestly, Tito Boy, I don't, wala. Kasi may kanya-kanya naman kaming ambisyon. Siguro sasabihin ng iba na ako raw tamad. But then, hindi, e. Kasi para sa akin, happiness is subjective, di ba? I think it's my problem, not theirs."

Tough Ten Question No. 8:
Sa lahat ng aktor na na-link sa iyo in the past, sino ang hindi mo makakalimutan at bakit?

Matagal bago nakasagot si Snooky at tinanong pa niya kung puwede ba siyang mag-skip ng question. Nang sabihin ni Boy na hindi puwede at saka lang siya sumagot.

"Ako, I have been known to be an honest person. I will not ever forget Albert Martinez."

Bakit?

"Kasi, unang-una, on a positive light, he was my first love, first boyfriend, and a... siguro let's leave it at that na lang. I want to be magnanimous."

Tough Ten Question No. 7: Sa lahat ng trials na pinagdaanan mo sa iyong buhay, ano ang pinakamabigat kung saan muntik ka nang bumigay?

"Siguro yung time na... Ngayon lang, just recently, yung nagkasakit si Mommy. That was very tough for me. Muntik na talaga akong bumigay. Feeling ko, magkakaroon na ako ng psychotic breakdown. Kasi my mom kasi, if I may kuwento a bit, nahulog siya sa bathroom. She suffered parang... Wala naman siyang fracture or anything like that, parang namaga yung likod niya ng konti.

"It was so painful that she has to be given steroids kasi nahihirapan siyang huminga. Because of that, nag-overdosage ang mga...the doctors obviously, nagkaroon siya ng... I know she will not mind if I say this...nagkaroon siya ng psychotic breakdown. And seeing your mom in such a breakdown, talagang ang parang feeling ko, I'm going to lose her. Because, Tito Boy, it's almost as if hindi na niya ako kilala. She was having delusions na. And then they wanted nga to make a procedure to make sure na hindi siya magkaroon ng heart attack ulit. Kasi nagkaroon siya ng mild heart attack noon, e.

"Whatever it is na nangyari sa amin ng mommy ko, kumbaga, parang touch and go. Yun ang parang tsamba-tsamabahan, e. Minsan, you like each other. Sometimes, we don't like each other that much. But the bottom line is she's my mother and I love her. And I will never change her for any mom in the world kahit na ano pang sabihin nila."

Tough Ten Question No. 6: Talking about what your mom went through, was there a time na you really went through chronic depression and naging drug dependent?

"Yes, Tito Boy. Noon pa lang nagsimula na ito, e. Because of the pressure nung time na talagang ka-busy-han ko noon. Parang I was so pressured to look beautiful, to look perfect. Kailangan payat ka kundi hindi ka gagawan ng pelikula. May anorexia [eating disorder] na ako noon, na I almost don't eat at all. Yun ang naging sakit ko just to please the people.

"I did not want to lose my job. I did not want to lose the comfort of life that I have been experiencing at the moment. So, to make the long story short, nagkaroon ako ng systemic mood disorder, they call it. Off shoot ng anorexia yun. Nagkaroon ako ng chemical imbalance. So, nagte-take ako ng mga gamot na to be honest, up to now, I'm still dependent on them."

Pero are those prescribed by the doctor? Supervised talaga siya?

"Yes, prescribed and supervised by the doctor. So, hindi ito drug addiction."

Tough Ten Question No. 5:
After two failed marriages, may mga pagkakataon ba na sinisisi mo ang sarili mo na parang ako ba ang may problema?

"Oh yes, a lot of times. Kasi parang feeling ko, having had two failed marriages na nga, parang you can't help it but question yourself then, e. Ang problema ko lang siguro is grabe akong magmahal that I forget about loving my self."

Tough Ten Question No. 4: In one of your intervies sa The Buzz, there was a point na sinabi mo na you're looking forward to reconcile with Ricardo Cepeda (Snooky's first husband).
Noong nalaman mo na mayroon na siyang bagong girlfriend ngayon, ano ang iyong reaksyon?

"Ang reaksyon ko siyempre... Kahit sabihin pang nagkaroon ako ng second husband, which I thought was going to last forever and unfortunately did not end up that way, masakit pa rin siyempre yung realization na, you know, this man who I lived with and is the father of my two children, he is my husband and I was loyal to him for 13 years, now has replaced me na. Parang ganun."

Isang tanong lang, do you still love him? It's answerable by yes or no.

"It depends on what kind of love."

Romantically?

"No."

Tough Ten Question No. 3: Kapag binalikan mo ang iyong nakaraan, ano sa tingin mo ang naging pagkukulang mo bilang isang ina to your children?

"Tito Boy, ayokong maging mayabang. But I don't think nagkaroon ako ng pagkukulang sa kanila. Wala."

Tough Ten Question No. 2:
You mentioned kanina na medyo rocky yung relasyon n'yo ng iyong ina. Pero at what point mo pinatawad ang iyong ina? And what point mo pinatawad ang iyong sarili in your own context?

"Noong time na nagkasakit siya and I thought na my mom will be a goner. Akala ko talaga na she will really go."

Did you say I'm sorry and I love you mom?

"Yes, I did. It was that time na I keep on telling her that I love her. And thankfully nung mag-wear out na yung gamot, na-flash out na sa system niya and she was back to her usual self, na-express namin sa isa't isa. Nagkaroon na kami ng closure. ‘Okay, hindi tayo parehong perfect. Parehong malakas ang personality natin. But the bottomline is we love each other. And we can not leave without each other.'"

Tough Ten Question No. 1:
According to reports, nakahiga ka raw sa salapi. Totoo bang sustentado ka ngayon ng isang napakayamang businessman?

"He is, thankfully, a self-made man. He is well-off. But more than anything else, he takes care of my spirit. He calms me down. He nurtures me in more ways than one. Money is much more secondary."

Yes or no, do you love him?

"I am in love with him."

Does he love you?

"I think he does."

Waiter Marlon Carmen Voted Off of "Survivor Philippines"

Dubbed as the "bad boy of Philippine primetime television," 30 year-old waiter Marlon Carmen finally got the boot in last night's episode of GMA-7 reality show Survivor Philippines.

With only seven castaways left, all the tribemates of Marlon in Chalam voted against him, while he voted against company driver Cris Cartagenas. Tina Sherman Nude Pictures Leaked the Internet

Posted by JED on Monday, November 24, 2008 , under , , | comments (1)

Tina Sherman's nude photos leaked the internet.

Who is Tina Sherman anyway? She's just an ordinary non-celebrity woman who's private photos intended for her husband Phillip Sherman leaked in the internet.

So here is the sad story..

Philip Sherman left his cellphone in McDonald's food chain. He called the McDonald staff about it and the staff assured him his phone is in safe hands and they will keep it secure for him until he personally gets it. For Philip Sherman who knows the hidden gold in his phone must felt better having been given the assurance.

But things went out of control. Phillip Sherman's wife Tina Sherman received some text messages and phone calls all lewd about her nude photos and it didn't end there....the Tina Sherman photos were posted in a website, and so people from different walks of life, different races were able to see it.

Ouch! That was truly an embarassment.

So where did the assurance from McDonald go? To their burgers?!

So anyway, Philip Sherman and Tina Sherman didn't laugh about what happened. Both didn't want that kind of publicity. Do you want to be popular in that way? Huh?

What could be the ending of this story? Lawsuit. So, Tina Sherman and her husband Phillip Sherman are now suing McDonald’s for $3 million claiming emotional distress and hardship.

And pals, are you so curious about the photo-- here is one of them...the rest? Gone!
