Chev Macias is Voted Off of Survivor Philippines

Posted by JED on Saturday, September 20, 2008 , under , , | comments (1)

The Bisayang Palaban Chev Macias made history by becoming the first castaway to be voted off Survivor Philippines.

Before voting began, Paolo Bediones asked the castaways their basis for voting out a tribe member.

Chev said she will base her vote on social status and whether the castaway badly needs to win the cash prize. While another castaway Cris said she will choose the one whom he thinks will be a burden to the tribe will get his vote.

When the voting began, Chev chose castaway Kaye to be kicked off the island.

But the rest of the Naak tribe all voted for Chev.

After Chev left the Tribal Council, she had five powerful parting words for her fellow castaways: "I hate you all guys!"

Richard Gomez' Family Feud versus Kris Aquino's Pilipinas, Game Ka Na Ba?

Posted by JED on , under , , | comments (0)

Richard Gomez will soon be seen in two shows on primetime television: the action series Codename: Asero and the upcoming game show Family Feud. This marks the first time that the matinee idol will try hosting a game show.

"We're taping in two weeks' time and siguro pagkatapos nun, magda-dry run kami nun," narrates Richard during the luncheon hosted yesterday, September 19, by the NMPP (Nagkakaisang Manggagawa ng Pelikulang Pilipino). He says that this new game show will replace Arnell Ignacio's GoBingo, which is airing right before 24 Oras in GMA-7.

The first week will feature showbiz families but the succeeding weeks will feature non-showbiz families. He reveals that around ten other applicants auditioned to be the host of Family Feud, but he was the one chosen by FremantleMedia to lead the show.

"Marami kaming pinag-audition, more than ten celebrities na nag-audition at sinend nila sa Fremantle. Sila ang nag-decide. Hindi ko alam kung bakit ako ang pinili. I just did my best dun sa audition. Nag-research lang ako online kung paano tumatakbo yung show."

Prior to his audition, Goma (Richard's nickname) searched for videos showing how they play Family Feud in the United Kingdom and other countries. "The whole show—from beginning to end. Meron silang mga contestants dun."

In the game show, two families will compete against each other to name the most popular responses to a common question that was posed to 100 people. There is a prize of P150,000 that will be accumulated every day until the winning family is defeated by the challenging family.

What is interesting, according to Goma, is the fact that people don't necessarily have to be related in order to form a "family." He says that this will initially run for one season but he hopes that this will be extended.

Since Family Feud shares the same timeslot as Kris Aquino's Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal, is he afraid of challenging the seasoned game show host?

"It's a big task considering established na talaga si Kris pagdating sa game shows. Malaking assignment at challenge para sa amin, lalo na sa akin dahil first time ko ito to do a game show," says Richard.

He adds, "I heard Kris really wanted to do Family Feud kasi isa sa mga paborito niya ‘to. Kaya lang, nakuha ng GMA-7."

Will this show get in the way of the friendship of Kris Aquino and Richard's wife Lucy Torres? "No, no. As a matter of fact, may lunch sila together today."

Kris already knows that Richard will be hosting the show that will be her direct competitor. What is her reaction to the news? "She's very happy for me," he said.

"Lalake Po Talaga Ako." - Bugoy Drilon, PDA 2nd Big Dreamer

Posted by JED on , under , , | comments (0)

In his 3 months stay inside the Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA) House, it was noticeable how Bugoy Drilon acts and show his true side to the extent that many were suspecting he is gay. But Bugoy is not affected at all.

Last Thursday, September 18, several days after he was named PPA 2nd Big Dreamer, Bugoy clarified the issue through a special press conference given by ABS-CBN to formally launched and introduced to the press the six finalists of the popular reality talent search show.

"Lalake po talaga ako," he replied quickly. "Ganito lang po kasi ako gumalaw 'tsaka magsalita. Jolly-jolly lang po.

"Nirerespeto ko po ‘yong pananaw nila sa ‘kin kasi may pananaw din po ako sa sarili ko. 'Tsaka ‘yon po ang nararamdaman ko. Ganito lang po ako, pero totoo po ako." he ended.

Lorna Tolentino Finally Accepts ABS-CBN Offer

After Rudy [Fernandez] demise, rumors started to spread within the showbiz circle that Lorna Tolentino will be transferring back to ABS-CBN.

On Thursday, Lorna together with her manager Lolit Solis, formally bids goodbye to GMA-7 big bosses as she finally accepted ABS-CBN's long-time offer.

Lorna is set to do a soap opera opposite Gabby Concepcion in the Kapamilya network.

"Ayaw ni LT na basta na lang siya gagawa sa kabila na hindi nagpapaalam," said Lolit. "Kaya nandito siya para siya mismo ang personal na magpasalamat at magpaalam. Ayaw naming mag-burn ng bridges, di ba?"

According to Lolit, GMA-7 offered Lorna a role in the TV remake of Saan Darating Ang Umaga with Yasmien Kurdi as the lead star. Lorna is supposed to play the role of Nida and Yasmien as Maricel Soriano. But Lorna declined the offer saying she already said "yes" to ABS-CBN prior to GMA-7's offer.

Jennylyn Mercado Will No Longer Renew Contract with GMA Artist Center

Posted by JED on , under , , | comments (1)

There were rumors that after Jennylyn Mercado gives birth to her love child with Patrick Garcia, she will transfer to ABS-CBN just like Angel Locsin and Valerie Concepcion who are also being managed by talent manager Becky Aguila.

According to Becky Aguila, Jennylyn Mercado will truly not renew her contract with GMA Artist Center (GMAAC) but denied the transfer issue as she will remain a talent of GMA-7 but no longer under the management of GMA Artist Center.

There are reports that Jennylyn camp is considering to be a GMA exclusive contract artist just like Kapuso superstars Marian Rivera, Dingdong Dantes, Richard Gutierrez, and Dennis Trillo.

Jennylyn’s comeback to the big screen is via the Metro Manila Filmfest entry “One Night Only” by Octoarts Films. There are also reports that she and former love team/boyfriend Mark Herras will be reunited in a primetime tv series on GMA.

GMA Films' I.T.A.L.Y. Grosses P17 Million on its Opening Day

Posted by JED on Friday, September 19, 2008 , under | comments (5)

There are text messages circulating about the opening day gross of GMA Films' I.T.A.L.Y. - the movie that stars Jolina Magdangal, Dennis Trillo, Rufa Mae Quinto, and Eugene Domingo.

The message was said to be coming from GMA Films President Anette Gozon which says, "GMA Films P35 million budget cruise comedy I.T.A.LY. grosses a phenomenal P17 million on its 1st day of showing. The opening day gross surpassed GMA Films’ expectation.

Even surpassing the P14 million opening day gross of Star Cinema/Viva Films’ A Very Special Love. We are now at the top with the future really bright for GMA.”

This text message is in conflict with another report from a reliable source that the movie only produced P281,000 as of 3pm on its opening day on September 17.

Nora Aunor's "Himala" is One of Best Asian Films of All Time (According to CNN)

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

CNN (London, England) - Asia: Spread over one third of the world's surface, it is home to something like four billion people in 70 countries. It also produces half of the world's film.

Bollywood, India's film industry, alone produces around 1,000 films each year -- almost two times as many as Hollywood.

This vast continent doesn't just come out on top when it comes to output, it has also sired many influential directors, actors and film-genres.

Ang Lee's 2000 homage to Chinese fantasy martial arts genre, Wuxia, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and Japan's unique take on horror, typified by films like Takashi Shimizu's "Ju-on: The Grudge" are just two examples of Asia's recent contribution to world film culture.

We have included films by Japan's Akira Kurosawa, China's Wong Kar-Wai and India's Mehboob Khan in our provisional list of the best of Asian cinema but we want to hear from Web site users. What are your favorites? Have we missed one? Perhaps you don't agree with our choices. Let us know in the Sound Off box below.

'In the Mood for Love' ('Fa yeung nin wa') Hong Kong/China
(Wong Kar-Wai, 2000)
Wong was heavily influenced by Hitchcock's psychological thriller "Vertigo" during the making of this poetic, exquisitely shot meditation on love and loss starring Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung. It was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000.

'Mother India' ('Bharat Mata') India
(Mehboob Khan, 1957)
One of the sub-continent's first ever blockbusters, it is also known as India's "Gone with the Wind." Acting legend Nargis plays a woman who must raise her children single-handedly after her husband is maimed in an accident, and becomes the catalyst for her fellow villagers to fight for their land. It was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 1957 Academy Awards -- India's first ever Oscar nomination.

'The Host' ('Gwoemul') South Korea
(Bong Joon-ho, 2006)
Arguably one of the greatest monster films ever made; a staggering 20 percent of the population of South Korea have watched this film. It is based on the true story of a U.S. military employee ordered to dump formaldehyde into the sewer system that leads to Seoul's Han River. Six years later a giant mutant squid starts attacking people (this part is made up).

'Syndromes and a Century' ('Sang sattawat') Thailand
(Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2006)
One of seven films commissioned by the New Crowned Hope Festival, part of Vienna's Mozart Year in 2006. Set in two hospitals, Weerasthakul reflects on the lives and memories of his medic parents using an experimental, anti-narrative style (a series of images, soft spoken dialogue and music) which was chosen by the hugely influential French film magazine "Les Cahiers du Cinéma" as one of the 10 best pictures of 2007.

'Whale Rider' New Zealand
(Niki Caro, 2002)
At just 12 years-old star, Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her extraordinary performance as "Pai" a first-born female in the patriarchal Whangara tribe who believes she is destined to be the new Chief.

'Still Life' ('Sanxia haoren') China
(Zhang Ke Jia, 2006)
Awarded a Golden Lion at Venice in 2006, Zhangke's wide-sweeping film is based on the human tragedy of the Three Gorges Dam (more than one million people have been displaced) which stretches across the Yangtze River. The story focuses on a miner who travels back to his home town looking for his wife only to find that his former home is now submerged. The film illustrates the gulf between China's new world order and the soon-to-be-forgotten culture of the past.

'Shower' ('Xizao') China
(Yang Zhang, 1999)
The richly humorous and touching story of Shenzhen businessman, Da Ming who returns home to Beijing where his father runs the local bathhouse, only to caught between two cultures -- the decaying district of his childhood and the booming South where he now lives with a wife who has never met his family. When he realizes his father's health is failing he must take stock.

'Shall We Dansu?' Japan
(Masayuki Suo, 1998)
Successful but unhappy accountant, Shohei Sugiyama spots a beautiful woman in a dance studio window. Despite his wife and child, he secretly signs up for dance lessons hoping to get closer to her. Slowly he begins to fall in love with the art form itself. A 2004 Hollywood remake starred Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere.

'The Ballad of Narayama' ('Narayama bushiko') Japan
(Keisuke Kinoshita,1958)
In the a remote 19th century village, food is so scarce that when the elderly reach 70 years old they must climb frozen Mount Narayama to die so their families won't have to feed them. Kinoshita's film is profane and shocking at times -- throughout the film, images of couples having sex are interspersed with scenes of animals and insects mating. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1984.

'Infernal Affairs' ('Mou gaan dou') Hong Kong/China
(Andrew Lau Wai-Keung, Alan Mak Siu-Fai, 2002)
Hong Kong cop thriller following the parallel lives of an undercover officer who infiltrates a Triad gang and policeman who secretly reports to a ruthless gang boss. "Infernal Affairs" breaks the mould of much of contemporary Hong Kong cinema by steering clear of over-the-top-action in favor of a slow-burning build up of psychological tension. Engrossing.

'Mandala' South Korea
(Kwon-Taek Im, 1981)
In the film that is considered to be his breakthrough as a cinematic artist, Im follows the lives and interactions of two Buddhist monks in Korea, and takes a contemplative look at the nature of individualism, religious belief and enlightenment.

'To Live' ('Huozhe') China
(Zhang Yimou, 1994)
Much lauded but banned in Mainland China because of its satirical portrayal of the Communist government, this epic, sumptuous film traces the personal fortunes of Fugui and Jiazhen as they fall from wealthy landownership to peasantry over 30 turbulent years.

'When the Tenth Month Comes' ('Bao gio cho den thang muoi') Vietnam
(Dang Nhat Minh, 1984)
A vivid portrayal, from the point of view of a young Vietnamese widow, of the legacy of the Vietnam war. It was released internationally under the name "The Love Doesn't Come Back."

'Himala' Philippines
(Ishmael Bernal, 1982)
Young Elsa thinks she has seen the Virgin Mary and goes on a healing crusade -- just the miracle the nowhere town she lives in is looking for. The film's austere camera work, haunting score and accomplished performances sensitively portray the harsh social and cultural conditions that people in the third world endure.

'A Touch of Zen' ('Xia nu') Hong Kong/Taiwan
(King Hu, 1969)
In this kung fu movie with a strong spiritual element a young artist finds himself caught up in the struggle to help a beautiful young woman escape the Imperial agents who murdered her family. A classic of the martial arts fantasy genre, which was the first Chinese film to win an award at Cannes Film Festival. It was also a massive influence on Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon."

'Ikiru' Japan
(Akira Kurosawa, 1952)
In this profoundly moralistic fable, longtime salaryman Kanji Watanabe, learns he has terminal cancer and, ultimately, through the experiences he has, the meaning of life. Takashi Shimura who played Watanabe was nominated in the Best Foreign Actor category at the 1960 BAFTA Awards.

'Utu' New Zealand
(Geoff Murphy, 1983)
Loosely based on the events of Te Kooti's War in the 1870s, it tells the tale of Maori tribesman Te Wheke who is serving in the British army. He is prompted to seek vengeance when he returns home to find his village and family destroyed in a senseless raid by the British.

'Gabbeh' Iran
(Mohsen Makhmalbaf, 1996)
An elderly nomad couple are cleaning their beautiful carpet or "gabbeh" when a young woman suddenly emerges to tell the history of her clan through the carpet. Beautifully filmed and the winner of numerous awards.

Bubunga rin ang 'yong mga pagsisikap.

Di na magtatagal
Ikaw itatanghal
Sa pagod at sa hirap
At sa 'yong pagmamahal.

Manalig ka
Malapit na
Malapit na.

Hawak ko na ang 'yong mga minimithi
Bukas na bukas din ika'y tatanghalin.
Higit pa d'yan ang darating
Pag iyong angkinin.

Ang iyong tagumpay
Ay tagumpay nating lahat din.

Manalig ka
Malapit na.

Malapit na.

Dingdong Dantes To Do a Movie with Piolo Pascual in Star Cinema?

Posted by JED on , under | comments (3)

It's unusual to see two of the most popular handsome actors from rival networks in one project. But Dingdong Dantes and Piolo Pascual made it happen through their latest product endorsement - Pond's.

During the launching of Pond's Pinkish White Dream Date at the Ruby Ballroom of Crowne Plaza Galleria Hotel in Ortigas Center, Pasig City today, September 18, Dingdong shared to press his experiences in working with Piolo who are very much identified with the Kapuso network, Dingdong said, "Sa akin, it's really a privilege."

The Kapuso actor also added, "The fact na magiging posibleng magkasama nga ang gaya namin na Kapamilya at saka Kapuso, much more na it's Piolo who I really idolize."

With this statement, Dingdong was asked by the invited press if he is open to the idea of working with Piolo in a movie project. "That would be a very nice idea!" he exclaimed.

Dingdong said that it would be okay if their respective film companies—Star Cinema for Piolo and GMA Films for Dingdong—would be able to bring celebrities from their stable together in one project again, just like what happened in For the First Time and another planned movie for Kapuso Richard Gutierrez and Kapamilya KC Concepcion.

At least nakikita na puwedeng posible siya and it's good for both industry."

What kind of role would he want to portray if this "dream" materializes?

"Ako, kahit ano, e," answered Dingdong. "Siguro kung mayroon mang ganoon, I'd like to veer away from what they see on TV. Siguro 'yong kakaibang ako, siguro mas challenging para sa akin na hindi masyadong mabait siguro," he ended.

So, what do you think of a possible Dingdong - Piolo movie team-up? Exciting or Boring?

Polo Ravales Plays ‘Ultimate Gay Role’ in “Walang Kawala”

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Com kaya more or less, wala akong problema with him.

Who knows at baka magka-award pa ang isa sa amin with this movie.

Interestingly enough, the radio station 97.9 Kiss FM has the same song posted on their website at 979kissfm.com. An unofficial official leak, perhaps?

The song starts off like “Hot as Ice” from Britney’s latest album, Blackout. “Candy From Strangers” reportedly features Laze & Royal. Brit or not, the song sure is super catchy!

Earlier this week, her label Jive/Zomba announced that her first official single would be “Womanizer”, and will drop on Monday, Sept. 22.

Dan Gheesling Wins Big Brother 10

Dan Gheesling schooled everyone on "Big Brother 10."

The sneaky 24-year-old high school teacher from Dearborn, Mich., won the voyeuristic CBS reality show's $500,000 prize Tuesday after outlasting 12 other contestants inside a makeshift house on a Studio City soundstage. Gheesling was unanimously voted the winner by the show's jury, made up of the past seven evicted houseguests.

"My personality traits will play into my strategy and make this an easy summer for me," Gheesling told The Associated Press before going into the house in July.

Gheesling bested runner-up Robert "Memphis" Garrett, a 25-year-old Los Angeles bartender, who earned a $50,000 second-place prize. During the fourth week of competition, the pair formed an unstoppable secret alliance, dubbing themselves The Renegades and plotting to evict their fellow "Big Brother 10" houseguests.

Los Angeles waitress Keesha Smith was also voted "favorite juror" by viewers and won a $25,000 prize.

Celine Dion and Charice Pempengco Duet at the Madison Square Garden

Posted by JED on , under | comments (1)

Young Pinay singing sensation Charice Pempengco had her dream come true when she finally sang a duet with her idol Celine Dion at Madison Square Garden on September 15.

As announced in Oprah Winfrey Show last September 9, Charice sang the song “Because You Love Me,” with Celine during the international diva's "Taking Chances World Tour 2008". That happens to be the first song Charice' had ever learned and it was dedicated by Celine to her mom after learning about their heartwarming life story.

This is how Celine introduced Charice to the audience:

"They actually told me about an incredible young singer that she [Oprah Winfrey] discovered a while back. You know, if you watch Oprah last week, you know all about her. This young lady's name is Charice. I'm so excited. She's 16 years old and she's from the Philippines.

"Let me tell you, she has a voice that can literally blow the roof off Madison Square Garden and she just might. But the real story is how Charice and her mom escaped the terrifying experience and had to leave Charice's violent father. You know, to start a life of their own.

"Charice vowed to save her mom from a life of desperation and despair. You know, through prayers and dreams and God-given talent, an incredible voice, Charice entered every singing contest in her native country and [was] eventually noticed by such influential people.

"You know, a show in Oprah and Oprah wanted to take her and took her under her wings. Then, the David Foster joined her. I had the chance to see Charice perform one of my songs on Oprah last week. I have a little bit of difficulty to talk right now because I met Charice, and I'm so emotional... So I'm searching and looking for my words...trying to control my emotion.

"I invited her to come here tonight to sing with me. Where are you sweetheart? There she is, come down, Sweetie."

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is Charice. [To Charice] You look spectacular! Are you shaking? Are you okay? Don't be nervous and, I think, a lot of people, they understand that you are nervous.

"I'm gonna tell you one thing, the talent we're not gonna talk about, because you have. The strength, we're not gonna talk about because you have, and so the love. And I have to tell you, the family, we'll gonna talk because you have to.

"One time, my manager, my husband [Rene Angelil], told me, ‘Celine...' Because when I started to sing, I was 12 years old, so 12 and 16, it's the same, okay? He told me, ‘Celine, I know you're nervous, don't be scared. You love to sing. When you go up there, you'll be nervous. Don't be.'

"I will give you an image that you can think about. Think that all the people you see in front of you are your brothers and sisters. You're singing in your living room and these are your family. They can't can't wait to hear you sing. I think I know you want to dedicate this song to your mother. So we're gonna sing ‘Because You Loved Me' for your mother."

There are hundreds of Pinoys watching and cheering for the Philippine's pride. Prepare for goose bumps when you watch the video below:

Cheap Gimmick at I.T.A.L.Y. Presscon?

Manila Bulletin Online

We didn’t particularly like the "gimmick" at the press conference of GMA Films’ new movie "ITALY" last Tuesday night.

Some may deny it was so but to us observers that night, the live simultaneous kissing scene (and it wasn’t just a smack!) between Dennis Trillo and Italian actress Andrea de Lugo and her lady friend with Mark Herras, was nothing but a cheap trick to keep the press "interested."

After a sing and dance portion with Andrea and Barbara, before the press conference proper even began, the host of the night interviewed the two and before we knew it, he calls in the movie’s leading men Dennis and Mark to join them and front. The next we saw was live torrid kissing! And for what, it simply escapes us.

Anyway, the reason we suspected it was a trumped up gimmick was that, we met the main stars Jolina Magdangal and Rufa Mae Quinto on our way out and we asked them why they were late, they chorused, "Kanina pa kami sa ibaba pero ayaw kami paakyatin muna."

We don’t know why a film would choose to resort to such contrived tricks just to catch the public’s attention. Could it be that the drumbeaters of the movie are kind of wanting for more interest because they are not confident of their product?

If so, how can they now be confident of it when GMA has evidently given its full weight behind the project — supporting its expensive production aboard a luxury cruise ship journeying through Europe.

We will find out, anyway, when the movie opens on Sept. 17.

Pangarap na Bituin, Iza Calzado and Volta Make it to 2008 International Emmy Awards Semis

Posted by JED on , under | comments (2)

A comedy superhero series from ABS-CBN...

The leading lady from an action fantasy series of GMA-7...

A teleserye from ABS-CBN...

...made it as regional semi-finalists in the 2008 International Emmy Awards.

As earlier reported, Volta starring Ai Ai delas Alas made it as regional semi-finalist for Best Comedy category in the International Emmy Awards.

Apparently, there are two other entries from the Philippines to make it as semi-finalists in the most prestigious award-giving body for television in the whole world. ABS-CBN’s Pangarap Na Bituin starring Sarah Geronimo, Maja Salvador and Rica Peralejo was nominated in the Best Telenovela category. The primetime soap is bound to compete with popular telenovelas in Europe and South America where the term “telenovela” was invented.

The third honor was brought by Joaquin Bordado’s leading lady Iza Calzado. She is the only actress from the Philippines to be nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress category in the history of Emmy.

The International Emmy’s is usually dominated by United Kingdom as the original Emmy Awards is for American television.

The 36th International Emmy Awards will take place Monday, November 24, 2008 at the Hilton Hotel, New York.

Last year, ABS-CBN’s news program Bandila became the first Philippine program to make it as finalist in the prestigious award-giving body.
